My work begins with a photograph. The origin of each piece is a photographic image that I have taken and often manipulated with one or more processes. The use of transfers, hand coloring, layering, injection, solutions, encaustic, mixed media, PS and AI are some of the methods I use. Expanding my passion for photography in new ways is extremely exciting.

    Artist Bio

Marcie Alkema is based in Plymouth, MA. Her photography journey began in 2007 at The New England School of Photography. At that time she was working as an RN in the OR at Boston Children’s Hospital. Working full-time days only allowed for evening workshops. Once she started taking classes, she continued non-stop for 4+ years. She fell in love with portraiture in the studio and beyond. Her subjects were families, individuals with their pets, and graduating seniors, to name a few. Her own dog, Karli, a Newfoundland was often posing in the studio.

She introduced a Pilot Project at Boston Children’s photographing infants and children in the critical care units for their families. This project continued for several years until the move from Brookline to Plymouth. In her opinion, this was, without a doubt, the most meaningful photography she has ever made.

After moving in 2015, she pursued Still Life and Macro photography. She has continued with numerous classes in person and online expanding her knowledge with digital composition/manipulation, photography based transfers, sketching, mixed media, collage, encaustic and AI-all of which are incorporated in some way with her photographic images. Marcie considers herself fortunate to have gained knowledge from the instructors at NESOP and many well known photographers and artists.

Her photographs evolve and take on new dimensions. Picture the possibilities.
